WSPRlite-to-go privacy policy

This page provides details of how your personal information is used by the WSPRlite-to-go Android app.

The app makes no effort to collect or transmit any information beyond what is required for the operation of the app (detailed below).

WSPR settings such as callsign and locator are transmitted by the WSPRlite and may be received by anyone with a radio and the correct software. Receivers normally upload their WSPR spots to WSPRnet.org, which is publicly visible.

Permissions summary

The app uses the following permissions:

Location

Your location is only accessed if you click the "Use my current location" button, and is used only to generate a 6 character Maidenhead locator, which is an approximate indication of location. Your exact location is not logged or sent anywhere by the app. The Maidenhead grid locator is written to your WSPRlite, and will be transmitted as part of WSPR messages.

Maidenhead locators correspond to grid squares, the size of which depends on where you are on the earth. A 6 character locator corresponds to a grid square of up to a few km, and will usually identify the town you are in, but not the house or road. You can edit the generated locator and truncate it to 4 characters to make the location less precise (grid square size up to a couple of hundred km).

The full 6 character locator is only transmitted as part of WSPR messages if you are using a compound callsign or enable the "Transmit 6 char locator" option (which defaults to off). Otherwise, the app will state that standard WSPR (type 1 messages only) will be used, and the locator will be truncated to the less precise 4 character form by the WSPRlite before transmitting.

Network access

The app will only access the internet if you click the "Autostart" or "Update firmware" buttons.

"Autostart" will retrieve the current time from public time servers using NTP.

"Update firmware" will download a list of available firmware versions, plus any firmware update you choose to apply, from DXplorer.net. To check which firmware versions are suitable, it sends information about the firmware and hardware revision of the currently connected WSPRlite. This information is identical for large numbers of WSPRlites, so is not personally identifiable. HTTPS is not currently used.

If you open the DXplorer link provided by the app:
The DXplorer link contains some of your WSPR settings, and an authentication token specific to your WSPRlite (to prove that you have a WSPRlite and therefore have premium access to DXplorer). This data is only sent to DXplorer.net if you actually open the link. The link does not contain any other information about you, or any information collected from your Android device. If you open the link, the details in the link are logged by DXplorer.net in order to validate authentication tokens and provide some statistics on the use of DXplorer.net.
